Texas Left Me Out

Texas has the highest rate of uninsured people in the U.S. Over 6 million Texans are uninsured. But when the state of Texas had a chance to cover more people, it chose instead to leave out about 1 million hard-working Texans.

WHAT IS THE TEXAS COVERAGE GAP?

Under the nation's health law, every person was supposed to have a way to get health care coverage. People with low incomes would get Medicaid as long as their state leaders agreed. The state of Texas said no. Now many Texans are left in a coverage gap, and there is no way for them to get health insurance.

WHO IS IN THE GAP?

About 1 million hard-working Texans fall into the health coverage gap. The gap includes veterans and their spouses. It also includes people who work in retail, construction, child care, hospitality, health care, or food service.

WHO CREATED THE GAP?

State leaders made a choice not to take federal money that would have let these 1 million people get coverage. Simply put, Texans are losing out because the state of Texas chose not to provide affordable health coverage to people most in need.
